Special Session

Thermal Dynamics in the Hive
Presented by Michael Malton – Texas Bee Haus

Michael Malton is a South Texas beekeeper and the owner of Texas Bee Haus. He focuses on practical, real-world beekeeping and uses a mix of hands-on experience and data to better understand what’s happening inside the hive, especially in the extreme Texas climate.

In this session, we’ll break down how bees heat and cool the hive, why certain temperature ranges are critical, and what happens when conditions get too hot or too cold. We’ll cover brood temperature, clustering, airflow, humidity, and how hive design plays a role. Michael will also share practical, science-backed tips you can apply right away to help your colonies handle Texas weather.
